SMS Marketing – The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly for the Mobile Marketing Industry

It seems like it was just yesterday that we were watching these absurd Radio Shack commercials promoting the ability to bring a telephone to any location that we are at in the world. Radio Shark Portable Phone and now in today’s world we have more cell phones than we have people living in this world. Pretty astonishing fact right? Even more amazing there are 6 billion active cellular phone subscription plans floating around the world at this current point in time.

So what does this mean for the world in which we live in today? Well the first thing is cell towers and satellites. Without these scientific factors we would have no connectivity and the lithium ion batteries would end up rotting away on a charge station. The next big thing that we all learned about at the Consumer Electronic Show this year is that the phone case makers and the aftermarket accessory business is a huge new fad that is here to stay and if you want to profit off of this than you better hurry up.

The biggest opportunity lies in two different markets. The first is the creation of mobile phone applications that can be downloaded and used by millions as well as low-cost mobile marketing services that will allow you to market to your potential clientele while giving you instant gratification and feedback on if they are interested in your product or not. The best form of advertising it is always said is the one that gets through and delivers the message to your customers. Well now with billions of cell phones sitting in every ones pockets it becomes accessible and convenient to reach your target audience.

So how does SMS marketing work and what are the drawbacks of the industry?

SMS stands for short messaging service and provides you the ability to receive messages in a text format on your mobile phone. If you are a business owner and you have received people leaving their phone numbers to receive updates for your latest events, promotions, and offerings from your facebook page advertising or when they have come in to patronize your business than you have an excellent opportunity to go forth and market via bulk texting. How it works is you upload your list of names and phone numbers to a database, than you choose your 160 character message and hit the send button. Next thing you know you are receiving instant replies as to know if your clients are interested and if not than they can reply with the message stop to restrict the messages from being sent to their phone anymore.

The negatives of the industry are as follows:

  • Reaches your target market too quickly and can overload your phone lines
  • You may receive spam complaints
  • It may become expensive if you have organic business or walk up traffic to your business or store front

No matter what way you spin it looking at the good, bad, and the ugly of the industry one thing is for sure. There are a lot of people with cell phones and they can be reached really quickly by using a text message and nothing is better than receiving instant gratification for your marketing efforts.
