Small business hiring pace rising, survey says

THEY HIRED: Small businesses added 35,000 workers in May, following an upwardly revised 35,000 in April, according to software maker Intuit. That's the highest growth since January 2012. Intuit's numbers come from data posted online by its customers.

GO WEST (AND SOUTH): Of 36 states where Intuit tracks jobs, 16 had gains, mostly in the South and West. Nineteen states, mostly in the Midwest and Southwest, had job losses. Employment was unchanged in Georgia.

BUT SALES SLIPPED: Small business revenue fell 0.6 percent in April, with real estate and retailing suffering the largest declines. Construction revenue fell the least.
