NEW YORK (AP) — VITALS: Jerome Byers, 45
CURRENT ROLE: Head of Citigroup's small business banking operations.
HOMETOWN: Alexandria Va.
EDUCATION: B.A., Jacksonville State University; Executive Leadership Program, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School.
SMALL BUSINESS CONNECTION: Used to own a hair salon. In the early days of his career in commercial banking at Wells Fargo & Co., Byers decided to buy a shop. He owned it for about 3½ years. Then he bought a strip shopping center. "My challenge was, how do I get sales coming through the door? How do I get people to spend? How do I maximize the return on cash and how do I treat my employees?" he says.
ON ADVISING OWNERS: "We're spending a lot of time investing in educating the branch personnel that we have so that when they're talking to small business owners every day, they'll ask, "what are you thinking about doing? Let me advise you about how you should be thinking about doing that so that when it comes time to borrow, you're ready."
SPARE TIME: Spends time with his family — his wife, AnJanette and their three sons. Also golfs and reads.
