Mothers and raising a business right: Small Business Reading for May 10th, 2013

This weekend it is Mother's Day - something that EVERYONE has in common. We have a nice article about the founder of the day/event itself (see below) but it is also worth taking some time to think about your Mother. For a small business, the founder is like its mother. You conceived the business and nurtured it. But since the only way your business is going to thank you is by repaying your hard work, how about taking the time to think about it as your child. What needs nurturing - and what needs a bit of tough love? And for those of you who are business-mothers-to-be, we are continuing to build out our series on starting a business - the links to the three articles that make up part four (all about naming your business) are below and you can find the links to parts 1 through 3 in them.

And here are some of the best stories from the past week on Advisor - in no particular order.

If you haven't taken the plunge yet, hopefully some of these articles give you the impetus to start your own business — and if you do, we have tools to help. Besides our domain name, web hosting and ecommerce products, we also have just added an innovative marketing dashboard that you can try for free even if you don't use our other products.

Some other great small business articles from around the web this week.

First off, here are a couple of opportunities for small business owners to get some education and/or advice. First up is a Demand Generation Virtual Summit on May 15 from 9-Noon. This consists of four webinars one after another about content marketing, demand generation, social media marketing and using video.

Second, Sramana Mitra has been offering a great service to startups for a long time - a weekly roundtable where she critiques some pitches from startups and discusses the issues they raise. The next one can be signed up for here and a recap of yesterday's is here.

Ever wanted to understand how startup funding and ownership REALLY works? How is it that founders end up with what sounds like a small percentage? This fantastic infographic breaks it down.

Why email newsletters won't die. Good article about the whole area of communication - but the bottom line for the small business owner is that email newsletters WORK - and they work better than everything else.

Have a great week, watch the bottom line and let us know in the comments if any of this was especially useful or if you have any advice you'd like to share. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook!
