Why would a pharmacetical drug be patented at not food products? #comparison?

Please help me understand.
why would drugs have patents and not grocery products for example a piece of fruit.

Basically because most drugs are artifically synthesised whereas fruit produce is naturally grown, noone invented it. I know there are some exceptions like drugs which are endogenous ligands (such as morphine) and in the future, genetically engineered fruit will probably have a patent attached if someone can stick one on it
