Why You No Longer Need a Programmer to Grow Your Business
In the not-too-distant past, it was nearly impossible for a non-technical business owner to get much done without hiring a programmer or web designer. Remember that? Remember when you needed to know HTML just to send an email to your customers?
Thank goodness those days are gone.
We’ve seen a deluge of tools, software programs, and apps over the past few years that have opened the floodgates to how small businesses operate and market themselves, and none of them require complicated technical skills.
Anyone Can Send Professional Emails
Font color and size. Tables. Images. These were once features of an email newsletter that required HTML coding. Not complex coding, but if you’re the owner of a hair salon, it’s probably a skill you lacked in 2000.
Now email marketing has become as easy as creating a Word document. Don’t have a designer’s eye? Just pick one of the templates that MailChimp or other email marketing softwares offer. Copy and paste your text. Upload a photo. If you know how to use a computer, even at a rudimentary level, you can send a professional email to your customers.
Blogging Has Gotten Simpler
Even blogging has come a long way since that first “weblog” in the mid-1990s. There’s minimal behind-the-scenes coding work. We now have access to tons of blog plugins and widgets that make it even easier to use SEO and keywords, share posts on social media, and upload free-use photos.
Just like anything, you can get complex with blogging, if you choose to. You can tweak the design to look exactly how you want it to (better yet: pay someone else to do it), but there are thousands of free and affordable blog template designs that have come a long way since the early days of 2-tone, 2-column designs.
Calculating Overtime No Longer Requires a PhD
Back when your staff used time cards or time sheets and you manually had to calculate hours worked and overtime, it was easy to make errors that could cost you money and cause you to be noncompliant with state employment laws. You had to know your state’s overtime laws or hire an accountant to take care of it for you.
Now employee scheduling software like Hello Scheduling’s features a time clock feature, so all a manager has to do is plug in his state overtime law and the overtime is automatically calculated based on the number of hours an employee has worked.
CRM Is Now Small Business Friendly
Another leap in technology we’ve seen is the fact that the software industry has begun to target small businesses rather than try to force an enterprise-grade solution on businesses of all sizes. Salesforce was once the de facto customer relationship management platform, but it was often too robust for tiny small businesses. They’ve now pared down their offerings for the small business segment with a small biz version, and other CRM platforms have followed suit.
When you’re managing just a handful of clients in a CRM system, you might be intimidated by a larger (and more expensive) CRM platform, but fortunately we’re seeing more useable software, such as Insightly. These tools aren’t difficult to learn to use, and they’re ultra affordable, to boot.
It’s a wonderful world we live in, now that technology has become more user-friendly for the average business owner, isn’t it?
