Most marketers regard commenting as basically a spamming tactic used to build links and earn exposure on popular blogs. Although there’s no denying that commenting does produce such a result, but it should also be given a fair shake as a more in-depth marketing strategy.

You see, it’s more than just spam. True commenting is about giving meaningful views and thoughts in order to promote relations, interactions, connections and eventually partnerships.It helps in building a strong presence so people would be given reasons to know more about who you are and what your company is all about, thus giving you the traffic and response that you aspire.

Define your goal – Commenting could either establish a though leadership reputation or increase the chances of people stumbling upon your site. Which one interests you more?

Identify your targets – Logically, you should go for blogs with high traffic volume to increase your odds. But if your goal is to let people know how competent your comments are, choose a forum where a more intellectual discussion is encouraged.

Put everything in order – Setup your permanent avatar so you can be recognized consistently, and look for an RSS reader that suits your taste for more efficiency in keeping up with your target blogs.

Now once you’re ready to start commenting, consider these guidelines:

You should:

  • Write genuine comments and expand the conversation.
  • Add a touch of personality on each post. Go ahead and offer a different perspective if you need to, but be careful on being too preachy.
  • Try to be entertaining as well, but point out a serious thought
  • Mention or address certain people to initiate connections

You should not:

  • Be generic in your comments. Avoid plainly saying “Thank you” or “Great post!” Elaborate on the things you liked and the ones you didn’t.
  • Be rude. Be tasteful in choosing your words, and if you have something contradictory in mind, remember that you’re commenting on the post, not the author.
  • Comment without reading the post. Don’t embarrass yourself by comments totally unrelated or inconsistent with the post just because you were too lazy to read the entire thing. You can’t leave a meaningful opinion if you know nothing about what was said.
  • Over-drop links. Unless absolutely necessary, do not include external links on your comments, especially a link of your own posts. Not only that you will be perceived as self-promoting, but it will also likely not be approved by the author.
