T-Mobile’s ‘Smartphone Equality’ program is promising to deliver the best deals to every single customer, regardless of past money mistakes that have damaged a customers credit report.
The new T-Mobile equality program starts on Sunday. Customers who have paid their wireless bill on time for a year—pre- or post-paid—will qualify for the lowest pricing. The program extends to both smartphones and tablets.
“This new approach puts the relationships we’ve built with loyal customers above their credit scores,” CEO John Legere wrote in a blog post.
According to Legere, a customers payment history is a prime indicator of their ability to pay in the future.
“Ultimately, this initiative will lower the barrier for millions more Americans to get a smartphone—the most transformational technology in our lifetime,” Legere wrote. “Last year, the carriers spent billions advertising deals and plans that half of Americans can’t get when signing up for wireless service. That’s complete BS,” he added.
The company wants their customers “relationship” with them to be the barometer for the money they save, and not potential mistakes they made with other creditors in the past.
After one year of on-time payments, customers will receive such benefits as $0 down, no interest, cellular plans. Anyone who has been with T-Mobile since January 25 of 2014 will automatically qualify for the program when it begins on January 25.
“This is not only the right thing to do. It’s the smart thing to do, too,” Legere said. “This is not a ‘First World problem’ we’re solving today. It’s a critical issue when a handful of companies in a single industry can play gatekeeper to the Mobile Age—and shut out millions and millions of Americans.”
T-Mobile last week unveiled its Simply Prepaid plans, which offer “unlimited” 4G LTE data, talk, and text, starting at $40 per month. 4G speeds are restricted to 8Mbps (half of the wireless networks typical download speeds) and when your data is gone on LTE, you are throttled to a painfully slow 128kbps.

Soon T-Mobile may have a new partner of sorts. It was reported today that Google Mobile could launch on the backs of T-Mobile and Sprint Wireless. Google Mobile could place even more pressure on AT&T Mobility and Verizon Wireless to lower their painfully high rates, especially for data plans.
