Facebook provides you with a large number of options to classify content and profiles when you find something offensive.

It’s worth nothing though that even though they provide you a “I don’t like this post” option, that that is basically a “send this to the trashcan” option because your friends do in fact have the right to freedom of speech.

However, when it comes to harassment, spams, scams, hacked accounts, violent behavior, hate speeches, and sexually explicit content… the report dialog is an excellent way to be sure some content potentially gets reviewed.

You can also report a whole account (profile) for fake names, impersonating someone, having inappropriate content (see above), being a fake profile, representing a business/organization, or being under age 13. (Once again the “this person is annoying” option is mostly to make you feel better and results in you wasting the time of staffers.)

If someone is annoying, aggravating, or generally needs to GTFO, your best solution is to block the person on Facebook. Here is also some additional instructions if someone is impersonating you or a relative on Facebook.

How To Report Content on Facebook

1) Click on the “Facebook” logo in your upper left or on the Home link in your upper right, to return you to your news feed.

2) Surf down your Facebook newsfeed until you come across the item that violates the Facebook terms of service.

3) Hover your mouse over the item until you see a small dropdown arrow apper in the upper right of the item itself.

4) Click on the drop-down arrow to reveal a menu and then select “Report Story or Spam”

5) In the resulting box, there is a link that says “If this story is abusive, please file a report”… if appropriate, click “file a report”.

6) In the resulting box, select the item that tells Facebook what the real problem is with the post. Options here include harrassment, spam, scam, hacked account, violent/harmful behavior, hate, and sexually explicit contact. (If the post is simply annoying you and isn’t one of these and isn’t a case of the law, you’re best just blocking the person and moving on because a report only wastes everyone’s time.)

Click continue and you’re (usually) done. A few of the dialogs will ask you to confirm sending of the report.

It’s as simple as that!

Facebook has very clearly defined their channels for what is supposed to happens when you send a report. Also interesting is the report by a Facebook staff member about what it’s like to receive those reports and how they are handled.

I use FBPurity to help minimize the amount of crap that shows up in my newsfeed too. Give it a try, you’ll like it!

Have you ever had to report yucky content in your Facebook news feed?
