Apple announces the iPhone. Later, Apple announces the iPad. Most people are impressed by the simplicity and design of the devices, as well as their ability to play games involving ill-tempered birds. There was much rejoicing. Truckloads of money were made.

Scene Two – Two seconds after scene one.

Facing the future in a “post-PC” world and unwilling to blindly accept their new overlords, a scrappy group of women and men vow to keep a legend alive. They speak in hushed tones and tell tales of a time when users were allowed to control their own file structures, where parents were allowed to pass files down to their children through SD cards, and where the only thing stopping men and women from creating new folders was the limits of their imagination.

    Scene Three – Present Day.

Word had come from the oracle. There had been pretenders before, snake oil salesapps that claimed to give power back to the people, but the real thing was finally coming. The prophecy would be realized.

On May 30, Microsoft launched Files, a file management app for Windows Phone 8.1.

    According to Microsoft’s blog:

“The Files app allows you to access all the files stored on your phone. If your phone supports expandable memory with an SD card, like the Lumia 1520, you can use the Files app to access files on the SD card as well. You can browse through files and folders, open and search for files that are on the phone or on SD card storage. You can create new folders and arrange your files across those folders using move and copy functions and you can also rename and delete your files. And you also have the ability to share one or many files on your phone with your friends, family or work colleagues.”

Files is currently available for download on the Windows Phone Store. It is free.
