Where Is America Moving To? [Infographic]

By | Small Business

Everyone always talks about moving to California or Florida.  While those places are certainly growing, there are plenty of other places in the South and the West that are experiencing major population growth.  While the reasons for this shift aren’t well documented, it probably has a lot to do with jobs.  People tend to move to follow the jobs, and since places like Detroit don’t make the list, it just makes sense.

People are still flocking to California like crazy, even though there’s a severe drought with no end in sight.  There are several desert-dwelling cities on the fastest growing list, from Salt Lake City, Utah, one of the most densely populated major metro areas in 2010, to Phoenix, Arizona, the #2 most popular moving destination in the United States in 2014.  Other popular moving destinations in the Southwest include Dallas and Houston, both in the top ten.

People are also moving to the South.  Atlanta, Georgia is one of the top ten most popular moving destinations, and New Orleans, Louisiana has grown a whopping 11.8% between 2010 and 2014.  Myrtle Beach, South Carolina was one of the fastest growing major metro areas from 2013-2014, as was Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.  Murfreesboro, Tennessee was also one of the fastest growing big city between 2013 and 2014.  People are clearly trying to make their way south and west for whatever reason.

A few cities in the Pacific Northwest are also growing rapidly.  Seattle, Washington is both one of the fastest growing largest 25 cities from 2010 to 2013 as well as a big city with the greatest population density for the same time period.  Seattle is also one of the top ten most popular moving destinations for 2014.
