The previous year has turned out to be one of record sales for many of the major luxury automotive brands. We can now add another to the growing pile, with Porsche also confirming that 2013 was its best year of sales on record, with 162,145 of its cars being snapped up during the past year. This figure corresponds to an increase of 15 percent in comparison to 2012’s tally of 141,075 vehicles, which was also a record for the marque.
Porsche enjoyed success in all regions last year, even economic stricken Europe. The U.S. was once again Porsche’s single biggest market, with 42,323 of its vehicles finding a home here in 2013, up 20.8 percent on the previous year. The Chinese market wasn’t far behind, however, and may even overtake the U.S. at some point in the near future. Porsche sold 37,425 vehicles in China in 2013, up 20 percent on the previous year. The third biggest market for Porsche was its home market of Germany, where 20,638 of its vehicles were sold in 2013, a rise of 17.8 percent on the previous year’s tally.
Though Porsche is probably best known for its 911, the marque’s best seller was its Cayenne SUV: more than 84,000 examples of the sporty SUV were sold last year. The 911 was also a strong seller, accounting for approximately 30,000 units of Porsche’s overall tally.
If you think Porsche is already selling a lot of vehicles, just wait until sales of its latest Macan crossover commence. Porsche has set a target of 50,000 annual sales for the Macan, but given its combination of reasonable pricing and impressive performance we suspect Porsche’s target is well on the conservative side. The good news is that profits from volume models like the Cayenne and soon the Macan go to help Porsche develop core models like the 911 and 918 Spyder, the latter of which is one of the fastest and most advanced cars ever produced.
“Thanks to our strong product campaign and the extension of our business model, we have been able to further enhance the appeal of our brand on a global scale, as demonstrated by the 162,145 deliveries we made in 2013”, Porsche sales chief Bernhard Maier said in a statement. “We are looking ahead to the coming months with optimism and are anticipating new growth with the Porsche Macan and 911 Targa models.”
