Wireless technology is seeing its next game-changing innovation – pCell wireless technology. PCell is based on a technology called Distributed-Input-Distributed-Output (DIDO). It promise to dismantle the notion of ‘wireless spectrum crunch’ letting each mobile device to get full wireless bandwidth by 1,000x. The superman behind the technology, Steve Perlman and his company, Artemis are looking forward to strategic partnership to bring pCell tech to market. Probably the Nation could be experiencing one of the biggest revolutions in wireless communication. Perlman said, it’s the biggest thing he’s ever done. The technology is designed to overcome some of the basic problems with the existing methods of cellular connections. They hope this process will make all the wireless-device users easily work with the maximum bandwidth, especially in crowded areas.

Perlman’s goal

Perlman aim to distribute wireless bandwidth, which uses large quantities of cheaper antennas that can be easily placed on locations like rooftop. In pCell base stations, there is an additional server that sits in the cloud, in a data center, in front of the web server, a special DIDO router called pWaves that emit radio signals all at the same time instead of one at a time. pWaves radios are small but stylish weatherproof devices that can be easily installed on indoor and outdoor walls or ceilings. The signals instead of avoiding any interference combine the overlapping radio signals and synthesize themselves into cells of personal wireless space and hence it is called pCell.  For instance, if there are 10 devices in the same area, all of them would receive 10 DIDO signals at the same time, add them together and end up with just the data meant for use. The best part is, any mobile device connected to this network has its own small bubble of wireless internet connectivity instead of sharing a large areas with dozens of users.

pCell and its power

PWaves radios are scattered around about one-centimetre areas of coverage and is dedicated to each device under the network. As mentioned earlier, pCell make use of software-defined radio functions to create signals that purposely interfere with each other. This results in tiny, 1-centimeter ‘personal cells’ around the antenna of each subscriber’s receiver. Devices remain isolated from other devices and do not interfere with each other’s reception. The upshot is a network that supply the system’s maximum capacity to all of the subscribers in range. This network can work in any band – licensed or unlicensed, and in any access point configuration and ensure that speed will not be slowed by the addition of more users in any particular area.  As Perlman explain – ‘Instead of avoiding interference, we create interference’.

pCell is transformative

The technology is transformative for the fact that everything of these pCells is designed to deliver full bandwidth, no matter how many devices are in use. The technology let all the subscribers receive unobstructed service as if they would be the only wireless subscriber in the area. Well! This is not the end. The good news is – rather than requiring special phones, pCell is also designed to work with off-the-shelf LTE phones and other gadgets that Apple or Samsung are already selling. In fact, the best part is that the phone can roam between pCell and LTE.

No slow wireless anymore

With pCell, there is no slow loading times, intermittent connections and dead spots. This wireless technology revolution aims to resolve network problems and rapidly meet the demands of the growing number of mobile users asking for high speed wireless connection. The pCell bubbles follow the devices wherever they go, ensuring that the connection is never broken. However, the area has to be under pCell coverage. The biggest advantage with pWave radios lies its less consumption of power and offering strong speed and signal strength. It uses 1 milliwatt to provide requested data, instead of 250 milliwatt as used by WiFi radios.

pCell and its little requirements

Most importantly, this technology requires less infrastructure to build, unlike towers that are costly in several ways. To add to your knowledge, average cell towers that provide signal to mobile devices costs approximately $15,000. Now this takes a toll in worker fatalities. According to a San Francisco scientist, Imran Akbar, pCell might also allow transmission of wireless power to different devices including tablets, TV, phones and other motor vehicles. The technology is ideally suited to all sorts of gizmos yet to be released such as future wearable devices, therefore, making it the perfect ingredient for the era of the Internet of Things. Ricky Dorothy, the research director of the Envisioneering Group also said that pCell does deliver multiple streams of data better than any cellular switching technology or 5G.

When can we expect pCell technology?

Perlman is expecting a commercial deployment of this wireless technology by the end of this year with broader global deployment in 2015. Perlman and his team have been meeting with different Internet service provider, major carriers and platform providers like Google and Apple and has been experimenting and performing test. Perlman has also declared that, for developing countries without LTE, Artemis Networks’ virtual radio would be an inexpensive way to offer fiber-class broadband than traditional cellular technology.

It’s time to stop thinking about mobile internet as unreliable and inconsistent. It’s high time to start thinking about what’s possible with global broadband.
