When filling their outdoor spaces, most American homeowners seek comfort, function and convenience above all else, according to the 2013 Residential Landscape Architecture Trends survey, commissioned by the American Society of Landscape Architects.
The outdoor living features currently most popular among respondents are grills (96%), outdoor living spaces (95%) and installed seating (90%). The majority of homeowners also value quality lighting, weatherized outdoor furniture, kitchens, fireplaces, entertainment spaces and outdoor recreation amenities, such as pools and tennis courts.
When it comes to outdoor design, most homeowners prefer sustainable and efficient installations over flashy or ostentatious elements. Popular among Americans are low-maintenance landscapes (94%) and native plants (87%), while vegetable/fruit gardens (83%) and sustainable-design practices (75%) are finding space in more outdoor living spaces across the U.S. than ever before.
