PICKING UP STEAM: Small businesses are slowly increasing the number of people they're hiring, according to reports this week. The payroll company ADP said Wednesday its small business customers added 58,000 jobs in May. Software maker Intuit said Tuesday its small business customers added 35,000 jobs.
NOT A BOOM YET: Both reports indicate that small companies are still cautious. Surveys have found that many owners plan modest hiring or to keep employment levels unchanged because they're unsure about their revenue and the economy.
UP NEXT: The Labor Department's May employment report, due Friday, will give a broader look at hiring.
