Let Your Newsletter Readers Subscribe by Category

Busy people ration their time and if you want to build readers for your brand, it pays to focus and be economical with your readers’ time.

How to economise on time

Many brands run web blogs and also newsletters. We recommend to many clients to re-purpose content which may have been originally written for a blog post to put it into a newsletter and vice versa.

Our blog here is distributed using RSS and we get FeedBlitz to handle sending the RSS feed out in a pre-formatted branded template to an email list of newsletter subscribers. This is scheduled and runs once a week.

Here’s an image of four newsletters we run for a client. They have a core “Newsletter” and then three niche ones for separate audiences, being a sports brand these are split into coaches, athletes and coxswains.

Make a new mailing list in FeedBlitz

Here’s how to make a new mailing list:

Got to the site dashboard. Top right are navigation buttons, select New List.

FeedBlitz gives you options:

  • Create from blog or RSS feed
  • Import from FeedBurner
  • Clone an Existing Newsletter

Select Clone from an existing….. this takes all the set-up hassle out because it uses the same ‘envelope’ design and can start with the same subscribers.

Now follow the wizard and modify the settings – first you should give it a new name because FeedBlitz will automatically give it the same name as the original with the word ‘cloned’ added.

How to select categories

Expand the section “Tag Driven Article Filtering” and you’ll see this dialogue…. add in the named categories or tags [Feedblitz can pick either or both] text to tell it which articles to include or exclude. And bingo, you’re done…

Select categories for newsletter

Last Step is to customise the subscription sign up form. This is done by going back to your site dashboard. Click on the newsletter you’ve just created and select ‘Form Code’ in the top right orange menu button.

Then follow the instructions on which subscription options you want to offer. Step 3 allows you to choose whether to offer the option to subscribe JUST to that list, or to give a choice of all the newsletters on this site. We chose that option so anyone can see the full range of newsletter options and select what they prefer.

Then copy and paste the formcode into the subscription page on your website and it’ll be ready for your readers.

Interestingly, when I added a new newsletter to Creative Agency Secrets, we selected the option we wanted, and the formcode was already up to date – FeedBlitz just changed it for us without us having to edit the website subscription page. Maybe you only have to do it for the first newsletter that you set up.

Now tell your readers what you’ve done.
