Be Lean, Be Tough, Be Smart

Most of the time running a startup company is far from glamorous. Forget about what you see on startup TV shows or movies — it’s not all like that.

“You have to be ready for hard work and frugal spending to get the idea off the ground.” – Garrett Camp / Co-Founder, StumbleUpon

In the beginning, every single dollar counts. Every dollar counts, and it’s what will let you survive another day. Know where all your money is at all times. Cashflow to small businesses is everything. Know what’s going out, know what’s coming in. Know what you need to make it another year, month, week or day. Know exactly what you need, how much it will cost and how it will positively benefit your business. Also, very important — know what you don’t need.

I remember the financial stress in the beginning of Marketing Press. I never want to forget that feeling and where we were. It makes me appreciate everything that we’ve grown to.

Not every company gets funded by investors, nor does every startup need funding. Be lean and get to work.

“Don’t worry about failure, you only have to right once.” Drew Houston / Co-Founder, Dropbox

Startups are not for the faint of heart. If you are afraid of failure, this game is not for you. How many great ideas fail — many. Why do they fail? Poor execution. Should you care — no. Learn from the mistakes that other startups make. Be tough and get to work.

“It’s really hard to do a really good job on anything that you don’t think about in the shower.” Paul Graham / Co-Founder, Y Combinator

I’ve always like this quote. If your business idea isn’t something that is always on your mind — you’re not on the right track. Your startup should consume your thoughts. How are you going to brand your company? Who is your ideal client? What’s your purpose? Even down to all the little things. Be smart about what you are about to do. Being fearless without being reckless and be smart when it comes to executing your plan. Be smart and get to work.
