One of the remaining big films to end this year is “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.” However, fans of the book and Philip Seymour Hoffman will be seeing less of him and his character in the final two films. The actor’s unfortunate death changed plans for the director.

Hoffman will be featured less in the films than initially expected as director Francis Lawrence recently revealed that he did not utilize CGI to finish Hoffman’s remaining scenes.

Regarding filming his scenes, Hoffman had almost completed his turn as Plutarch Heavensbee for the final two installments of the “Hunger Games” franchise, “Mockingjay – Part 1″ and “Mockingjay – Part 2,” when he died on February 2 from mixed drug intoxication. Lawrence said that the creative team decided against using “digital trickery” to replace Hoffman.

Lawrence talked to HuffPost Live about rewriting the script after production resumed on “Mockingjay” following the actor’s untimely death.

“He had two scenes with dialogue that were left and we decided we didn’t want to try any kind of digital trickery with him, so we rewrote his scenes and gave his dialogue to other actors,” he said. “So there was one scene from ‘Part 1′ and one scene from ‘Part 2,’ so we shot both movies back to back.”

Lawrence said it would have been disastrous to use technology to recreate such a talented actor’s performance. His decision comes in contrast to one made by the team behind Furious 7 and the use of scenes involving the late Paul Walker.

“He was one of the greatest actors, I think, of all time and I just think to try to fake a Philip Seymour Hoffman performance would have been catastrophic and I would never want to do that,” Lawrence said. “I just think this was the best way to be able to get around such a horrible thing.”

In related news, Woody Harrelson stopped by Saturday Night Live this weekend and like most things this week he got Taylor Swift involved. Harrelson’s monologue a was a musical reminiscence of his 1989, most of which apparently involved doing drugs and hanging with the cast of Cheers. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth also appear with the host.

In addition to the surprise appearances, Harrelson’s love of marijuana were a common theme throughout the night, both in his opening monologue and also in a few of his skits. The actor – an activist for the legalization of marijuana – smiled as he said through song that he had taken cocaine, then did skits about pot and even crack.

N.Y.C. recently legalized marijuana – to a degree. That is the basis for one of SNL’s sketches, which feature a few Big Apple potheads re-discovering the outside world in light of the new law. Unfortunately, they realize that’s not exactly all it’s cracked up to be, but not before viewers saw Harrelson wearing a dreadlocks wig and a Funyun flag.

Do you agree with the director’s choice to not use CGI to replace Hoffman in the last two films? What did you think of Harrelson’s performance on SNL? Did you enjoy Lawrence’s singing?

“Mockingjay – Part 1″ opens in theaters next weekend.
