Andrew von Rosenbach is a digital media professional from Vancouver, B.C.. He was born and raised just outside of Toronto and has a double major in economics and philosophy and a masters in digital media. When he’s not working on digital media projects or on Pinterest, you can find him playing video games, cooking for his food blog, playing music, watching hockey, or hanging out with his girlfriend Shelby and their “adorable, frumpy cat” Alice. Andrew’s comical themes, design pins, and unique board names have earned him over 282,000 followers on Pinterest!

When did you start using Pinterest and what drew you to make an account?

Matt Schroeter, another top pinner, sent me an invite to Pinterest beta back in 2011. I was hooked immediately because sharing and curating internet gold is kind of an obsession of mine, and I really wanted to inject cool new image content into the Pinterest ecosystem. I’m not much of a repinner but I like to think I have good taste and Pinterest is a great validation of that.

Why do you like Pinterest?

Pinterest is just such a fundamentally good idea, top to bottom. It’s got the potential to be a richer search engine than Google and it’s more visual and engaging than Twitter. Users can even create their own business or museum on it. It has something for collectors and feed junkies alike, with social elements that enrich rather than distract from the overall experience. Pinterest is probably the best website on the internet right now, and it’s only getting better. It’s really the future of the internet.

You have gained over 282,000 followers. Nice! So what makes your Pinterest unique?

My approach was always ‘subvert the medium.’ I tried to add content to Pinterest that I felt was cool but underrepresented on the site like funny stuff, men’s style, fine art, and cool pictures of chairs. When YouTube pins were allowed I started creating mixboards devoted to musical genres I liked. I’ve since deleted them to clean up my pinterest clutter but I have always tried to be different while having a little fun and people seem to really respond to it. I also like to pin joke pins, although not so much anymore. My favourite of all time was this one. It still makes me laugh.

What do you like about living in Canada? Have you traveled much? If so, where and when?

Canada is great. It’s relaxed, it’s progressive, it’s clean and it’s safe. Not a lot to complain about, other than the winters, but I’m a big hockey fan so I don’t mind. Go Canucks!

I’ve traveled Europe quite extensively. I have a lot of family and friends there. Recently I spent 2 months backpacking across northern and eastern Europe. I’d love to travel to South America and Asia soon. I’m hoping that I’ll get a chance to go see them for my work soon!

Has Pinterest inspired your passion for digital media?

Pinterest is a constant source of inspiration, especially as an entrepreneur. I like to think about the business behind Pinterest as much as I do about the content on there, and as I said, I think the company is poised to become the most important website in the world for merchants, shoppers and content consumers over the next few years. I can’t talk too much about the project that I’m working on right now, but we’ll be launching this fall!

Tell us more about your Pinterest boards. What are your favorite boards to pin on and why?

My Love to feel board is the best. Above all, I love to laugh, and that’s where my laugh-worthy pins go. My meats beats and seats board was a great idea back in the day. It’s composed of a combination of recipes, album covers and chairs. Sexy people is my favourite blog on the internet, so that board will definitely give you a good laugh as well.

Your Aesthetics Economics board is really cool. Tell us more about it and how those images inspire you.

I was exposed to some brilliant artists and designers while earning my masters degree, who in turn led me to consider the visual side of life more closely. I was an economics major before all else and I’ve always found beauty in efficiency and simplicity. I feel as though design is really the economics of aesthetic experience and the intersection point of my systematic and artistic passions. The board represents my tastes as such.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans are to launch my project this fall, get a dog, do some DIY apartment ideas I find on Pinterest, and officially claim my American girlfriend for the glorious nation of Canada.
