The Good, Bad & Ugly: Valentine’s Day Ads

Last week I discussed how to get your business ready for Valentine’s Day. This week I am going to complement that blog with real-life examples of what companies have done well and not so well.

Valentine’s Day can be a tricky holiday to market on because it favours particular businesses that can take advantage of their brand and cater to that ‘love’ aspect:  restaurants, jewelry stores, lingerie stores, chocolatiers etc…If your business is not of that nature, PLEASE do not force a marketing campaign on that day. You will look silly and unprofessional. People will easily dismiss it and it will possibly deter them from your brand. Every year many companies try to associate themselves to this day of love because they see revenue potential where the rest of us see hearts and cupid.

So here they are; the good, the bad and ugly of Valentine’s Day ads! Ads are courtesy of Business Insider and The Drum.

GOOD: Google Doodle

Google released a special animated YouTube clip of a boy trying to win over the heart of a girl. This video would play after a user clicked on a picture of a Valentine’s Day card on the homepage. It is a simple, yet heart warming clip. The animation also redirects users through to related Valentine’s Day links.

UGLY: Green Smoke electronic cigarettes

Nothing says ‘I love you’ like strawberry electronic cigarettes on sale (it’s still a lot of money if you ask me). To all you men out there, please, spare your women one day and get her something she will truly enjoy.

GOOD (but could have been bad): Brothers Pizza

During the month of February, if you order a heart-shaped pizza from Brothers Pizza, a portion of the proceeds will go to the American Heart Institute. Now, I don’t think your lady will enjoy a pizza on Valentine’s Day, but Brother’s Pizza did a good job promoting this speical for the entire month of February, allowing people to try it on other days besides Valentine’s Day.

BAD: McDonald’s France

Really? McDonald’s have had some amazing campaigns, but this one is a major exception. Sure Big Macs are grand, but a lady will not want to receive one on Valentine’s Day…even if you’re wearing a nice suit.

GOOD: Starbucks Cup Magic

In this ad, Starbucks has done an excellent job with augmented reality tactics – almost seems surreal and magical! When users bought a Starbucks cup with the heart logo, anyone with a smartphone can direct their device at the cup and will see heart shaped flower petals drift away. How cool is that?

BAD: Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union

Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year where love should be the only topic. Why is a credit union trying to weasel their way into people’s hearts? That’s the last thing that people want to talk about.

UGLY: The Bronx Zoo

“Flowers wilt. Chocolates melt. Roaches are forever.” This one is quite literally ugly. The Bronx Zoo thinks that nothing is more romantic than naming a Madagascar hissing cockroach after your sweetheart.

UGLY (and offensive): Natan Jewelry

Natan Jewelry takes the prize for ugliest and most offensive Valentine’s Day ad. It basically suggests that diamonds are the only way to a woman’s…”heart”. It is demeaning and disrespectful to women as it portrays them as golddiggers.

What other Valentine’s Day ads have you seen that you have admired and/or despised?
