Take the Friday Challenge
Imagine a world where you were free from the day to day running of your digital business, where you could breeze into the studio whenever you wanted to, work on whatever projects you wanted to, develop new products and services or spend more time at the gym or with the family whenever you felt like it?
…..and knowing that all the while, the team back at HQ were dealing with everything perfectly.
Sound like a fantasy?
Well here’s a way for you to start turning it into reality:
For every Friday from now on, work away from your office or studio.
It doesn’t matter where, it could be from home, a coffee shop, or co-working space or the beach.
If you try it, and stick with it, I promise you that some magical things will start happening;
You will get more work done.
By having clear thinking space you will get WAY more work done that when you are being constantly interrupted in the office.
This might not be true for the first or second time if your team aren’t used to you being away from the studio – but by the third time they’re likely to be getting used to the idea and you are likely to be contacted less.
It will make you realise where YOU are the bottleneck in the business.
If the team won’t leave you alone in Skype /email / phone, think about why that is? Empower them to make their own decisions. Set up processes that other people can follow without you being there.
“Can you check these wireframes before I send them to the client?” You could – but wouldn’t it be better to spend an hour of your Friday making a ‘wireframe handover checklist’ so that someone else can do it so you never had to do it again? Just an idea.
It will give you more planning time.
You’ll have more time to work on growing your business rather than just running your business. You’ll be able to spend time on your strategy or finding your next rock star developer.
Your business will start growing faster because of this – trust me.
It will teach you to let go.
Will everything be done 100% the way you want it? Probably not. But 90% is good enough and it’s unlikely to lose you any clients. If it frees up a day a week to concentrate on growing the business then it’s a very sensible trade off.
It will teach you to plan ahead and delegate properly.
If you don’t want constant questions on Fridays then you’ll need to plan ahead and make sure everyone knows what they are supposed to be doing. Once you have got Fridays nailed then plan ahead Thursdays, Wednesdays and so on until the team is able to run itself!
Go on, try it – what’s the worst that can happen? :)
Have you taken the Friday challenge? How did it work for you? Let me know in the comments – I’d love to know.
