Football inspires passion in millions of people and this is never more evident than when a derby match is involved. Our infographic, produced on behalf of Unibet, takes a light-hearted look at 10 of the world’s greatest footballing nations, and compares details of the clubs battling it out for pole position with their biggest rivals.

El Clásico (“The Classic”) is the name given to any match between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. Originally it only referred to those competitions held in the Spanish championship, but nowadays it includes every single match between the two clubs. Other than the UEFA Champions League Final, it is the most followed club football match in the world, watched by hundreds of millions of people. The intense rivalry between the two clubs is fuelled by both teams claiming they have the best player in the world – Madrid with Cristiano Ronaldo, the most expensive footballer in history and Barcelona with Lionel Messi, the first football player in history to win four FIFA/Ballons d’Or, and current all-time top goal scorer in La Liga.

In Germany the rivalry is between Borussia Dortmund and current Bundesliga shield holders FC Bayern Munich. Although Dortmund has the larger stadium it falls far behind Bayern Munich in numbers of followers on Twitter and Facebook. England has the North West Derby, fiercely contested by Manchester United and Liverpool. At the moment the Old Trafford team are ahead, with more wins and better averages as well as being in profit ( unlike Liverpool ). The Old Firm is the collective name for the Glasgow association football clubs Celtic and Rangers. The competition between the two clubs has its roots in more than just sporting rivalry and involves religion, politics and social ideology. This probably makes it  the hardest fought and most controversial derby on our list.
