Facebook Announced Embedded Posts

By Nirali Hingwala | Small Business

Few days ago, Instagram unveiled web embedding for photos and videos. Facebook’s Instagram competes with Twitter’s Vine by trying to spread its content across more websites. Now, Facebook allows embedding “public” posts on third-party sites. This feature is a social plugin that lets you easily add public posts from Facebook to your blog or web site.

How do I embed a post from Facebook?

To embed a post, first check if the post is public by hovering over the audience selector (you’ll see a globe icon). Only public posts from Pages and Facebook users can be embedded. If the post is public, click the “Embed Post” option in the drop down menu. In the dialog that pops up, simply copy and paste the code provided on your own web page:

Embedded Posts are displayed just like they do on Facebook, with the ability to show any media attached to it like pictures, videos, hashtags, links as well as the number of likes, shares, and comments that the post has. Embedding posts will let your viewers see the same rich information that is shown on Facebook, and they will enable people to follow or like content authors or Pages directly from the embed. People can interact with Embedded Posts by Liking or sharing the post directly from your web page. They can also Like the Page or follow other posts from the author using the top right button.

This feature enables to visit the post’s comments, photos, hashtags and other content on Facebook.Embedded Posts is currently available to a handful of news publishers. Bleacher Report, CNN, Huffington Post, Mashable and People are the first sites to be allowed to embed Facebook posts. Facebook is planning a broader rollout of Embedded Posts soon.

If the author changes the post audience selector from public or deletes his / her post then a message saying that the post is no longer available will display in place of the embedded post. It is understood that Facebook is trying to increase its footprint on the web and diverting more traffic on its site.

With the post embedding feature, Facebook strategically becomes a source of content for publishers and journalists. Facebook’s news feed and search is slowly moving to real-time nature. It seems that the launch of the graph search and the hashtags was in this direction. News websites and blogs will be able to make stories out of current events and breaking news on Facebook.

Facebook shared three ways to discover public posts on Facebook:

  1. Liking the pages or following the profiles of public figures and news publishers – You can like the page or follow the profiles of popular public figures such as celebrities, musicians, and sports figures. You can also like news publishers and follow journalists to find breaking news updates and commentary to embed.
  2. Browsing Hashtag feeds – You can find comments and updates by browsing through hashtag feeds, like this feed for the popular hashtag. Click on hashtags that people are using to see a feed of posts that include that hashtag.
  3. Facebook Interest Lists – Facebook interest lists are a way to browse posts by public figures you are interested in. You can subscribe to Interest Lists that exist already like “Photographers” by searching for them here or you can create your own.
