Dont Let Holiday Stress Kill Your Productivity
Owning a small business is a wonderful opportunity to direct your own financial destiny but it carries with it a lot of pressure.
There’s no one else to blame for your professional failures and many entrepreneurs are always on the clock.
Enter the holiday season, so full of promise for a joyful season of family togetherness and well-deserved time off. But there’s also a lot of rushing around, over-indulging and hectic planning that goes on this time of year.
Here are 5 tips for managing your stress and keeping your productivity high this holiday season.
1. Travel Well
Travel can make it especially difficult to stick to your usual work schedule.
If you plan ahead, however, you can avoid some of the most common problems.
By bringing your own Internet through a portable router or pay-as-you-go service, you won’t have to depend on public Internet access, which is never guaranteed.
Keep your laptop and other hardware in sturdy luggage to prevent damage in transit, and prepare some offline tasks that you can complete anywhere.
This will give you more freedom to unwind when you reach your destination.
2. Get Some Perspective
This time of year there are often days when it seems like no one else is in the office to return phone calls or emails. It may be the perfect time to get some distance from the daily grind and really put your business under a microscope.
Look at your workflow and see if there are any areas in need of improvement. Are you using all the tools at your disposal? Are there any apps programs or software out there that could help maximize your time and increase your productivity?
The better prepared you are now, the more likely you’ll be to take advantage of the first of the year when many corporate budgets roll over and new business opportunities arise.
3. Just Say No Thank You
Excessive drinking can obviously disrupt your productivity, but overeating can do the same.
If you eat a huge, heavy dinner, your sleep will be disturbed and leave you tired the following day.
Indulge in too many of the sweet treats people are always passing around these days and you’re likely to end up on a blood sugar roller coaster ride that can make you moody and prone to distraction.
For many of us who have trouble stopping once we get started, a polite ‘no thanks’ is usually the only way to go.
If you drink alcohol, try to have at least one glass of water for every alcoholic drink you consume.
4. Keep Moving
A number of studies have found that regular exercise works as well as medication at reducing some of the most common symptoms of depression, including anxiety.
During the holidays, it can be especially tempting to forego your regular exercise routine.
Fortunately, it doesn’t take much time to get some moderate exercise here and there. Enjoy the celebrations, but remember to exercise, even if it’s just walking laps at the mall, and you’ll stay happier and more productive.
5. Limit Social Media Time
During the holidays, a slew of parties and events means more opportunities for sharing updates and photos.
It’s okay to check in occasionally and share some of your own fun, but it’s important to set limits and avoid oversharing.
Designate time slots for easy management, and download software to block social sites until you get your work done if it helps you meet your goals.
