The Copyblogger Formula for Blogging Success

List five of your favorite writing blogs. If Copyblogger is not one of them, then you’re not reading enough. I’ll have to borrow the original Pringles slogan to show my admiration for Copyblogger: “Once you pop, you just can’t stop!” Whenever I chance upon the site during my research periods, I can’t help but marvel at how much I want to click and read, click and read.

And it’s not only me.  Other blogs have mentioned Copyblogger at least once in their posts.  Do a Google search and you’ll see posts on why Copyblogger is an influential blog.  Kissmetrics has a post titled 18 Reasons Why You Need to Read Copyblogger. The RingCentral blog lists the Copyblogger Twitter account as one of the 20 Twitter Accounts Every Small Business Owner Should Follow.

What are the reasons for Copyblogger’s success? Here’s my two cents on that:

They spark curiosity

Headlines are what catch the reader’s attention. Write a boring headline and you can count on your blog post languishing on almost nil views. Copyblogger headlines instantly hook you.  Here are a few examples:

109 Ways to Make Your Business Irresistible to the Media

What makes it interesting: the sheer amount of tips – 109!  Now, let’s take a look at another post:

The 5 Most Persuasive Words in the English Language

What’s the appeal factor of this post?  With the gazillions words in the English language, the writer has reduced it to the FIVE most persuasive.  There’s the element of curiosity — What are the five most persuasive words? What makes them the most persuasive?

Here’s another post that uses the element of curiosity: 5 Landing Page Mistakes that Crush Conversion Rates.  If you’re working on landing pages, then you’d definitely want to know what those mistakes are.

They choose stimulating words

Take a look at all of the previously-mentioned posts, and you’ll notice that the choice of words stirs excitement.  Irresistible, most persuasive, and crush are stimulating and superlative words.  What if those titles were rewritten?

109 Ways to Make Your Business Irresistible to the Media vs. 10 Ways to Make Business Interesting to Media - “irresistible” is more irresistible than “interesting”. And I don’t need to explain why 109 ways beats 10.

5 Landing Page Mistakes that Crush Conversion Rates vs. 5 Landing Page Mistakes that Decrease Conversion Rates – “crush” gives readers a greater feeling of urgency compared to “decrease”. Crush invokes utter failure in your landing page conversions. On the other hand, a decrease leaves room for hope for an increase.

Make titles exciting and spur interest by choosing precise words.

They know their audience

What makes Copyblogger headlines compelling?  Well, that’s because they’re specifically written with an intended audience in mind.

For instance, the post 60 Ways to Increase Your Influence Online is an instant attention-getter for the intended audience of online writers.

They’re timely, timeless, and helpful

Let’s take another look at the post 60 Ways to Increase Your Influence Online.  These days, “online authority” has become a huge buzzword as online writers aim to rank in Google search engines.    Another timely post in this age of microblogging is The Ultimate Guide to Twitter Marketing.

On the other hand, the post The 5 Most Persuasive Words in the English Language will most likely never lose its appeal.   The topic’s relevance is not time-bound by any event compared to The Ultimate Guide to Twitter Marketing (face it; there might come a time when Twitter is no longer relevant).  The writer also made the complicated a lot simpler for his readers.  I don’t have to leaf through my dictionary and study each word to find out which is the most persuasive.  Copyblogger has done the hard work for me!

They use simple language

Reading through a Copyblogger post is like a taking a walk on a clear day and on a road with no obstructions.  There are no distracting and unnecessary words or metaphors. The tone is straightforward, non-preachy, never overly intellectual, yet not dumbed-down either.  Each post uses simple and crystal-clear language specially chosen for its readers.

They tell a captivating story

The clear roads on Copyblogger are never boring though. They don’t just hook you with a brilliant headline; rather, they draw you into a meaty story.  The value of Copyblogger is in its content. How do you weave a story the Copyblogger way? Posts such as How to Tell the Stories Your Audience Wants to Hear, 3 Simple Storytelling Methods That Can Do Your Selling For You, and Tell a Tantalizing Story to Kick Off Your Blog Post tell you how.

They use internal links

Internal links are links that point to other pages within the same website. Within a Copyblogger post are internal links that helpfully direct readers to related and equally helpful Copyblogger content.  Combined with the other factors for Copyblogger success, this strategy compels readers to browse through more Copyblogger pages.

They make it easy to share

A simple layout, a well-placed email subscription box, noticeable social network buttons, and an active commenting system increase audience engagement with Copyblogger content.

If you want to understand the basics of crafting a successful blog post for business, look no further than Copyblogger.
