This applies to you if you are looking for more plumbing leads, or pest control leads, or remodeling and home improvement leads, or other home contractor leads.

I will show you a simple principle that you can use to get up to twice the response rate on your contracting website leading to more phone calls, or inquiries.  In fact, you can apply this principle to numerous business types.

To back up my assertion, I want to show you a case study of 2 nearly identical website landing pages.   There is only one very minor change.  Yet, one page got twice as many leads.

Watch here to see the 2 nearly identical pages.  See if you can guess which did better.

Why did one website landing page, nearly identical to another, get 100% more leads?  It comes down to understanding human behavior.

Understanding internet search behavior

When you attract people to your plumbing, HVAC, or remodeling website, you must have a goal for each page on your site.  What do you want to accomplish on each page?

For example, on your “about us” page (a really important page so don’t skip it), you want the website visitor to like you and trust you.  On your services page, you want them to come away realizing you are an expert and know what you are talking about.

On many of your website pages, however, you just want people to contact you.

Here is a key point:  You can’t attract searchers to your website and then assume people will do what you want them to do (call you, schedule an appointment, request an estimate, etc.)

Never assume that.  In fact, assume the opposite.

You must decide ahead of time what you want to accomplish with searchers on a particular page… then intentionally lead them from A (where they are) to Z (your goal).

Often, you simply need to get them to the next step (perhaps B, or C).   Keep them moving forward in the process.  You may not be able to sell them “Z” at the beginning, but you can convince or sell them on the next step.

We call this a mini-sale.

Obstacles to getting a website visitor to the next step

But, there is often a problem that short circuits this process.  One problem that subverts moving someone to the next step is allowing other elements on your website to distract them from focusing on the next step.

To visually demonstrate what you are up against (keeping the website visitors focused and moving ahead), you need to see your website visitor like the characters in the short clip below.

Watch the 30 second clip… and be prepared to laugh and learn.

Don’t you just love those scenes?  But, don’t just laugh… learn from them.

Website visitors and ADD

You need to see your website visitors as having Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).  They are easily distracted.  It is your job to keep them focused on your goal, on the next step in the process.

In the initial video above, website visitors were sent to 2 identical pages.  Well, identical except that one didn’t have a navigation bar at the top giving people options in addition to the one you want them to focus on.

As you might guess by now, by removing the navigation bar (this procedure is only recommended for landing pages) you remove one potential distraction for your (ADD) visitors.

In the spirit of the movie “Up” in the short film clip above, the navigation bar to your visitors can look like this to your website visitors

By removing the navigation bar on your landing pages, you are eliminating a tempting distraction and forcing the visitor to focus on the one thing you want them to do.

As the statistics proved, even though both pages received the same number of website visitors (equally distributed), the page without the navigation bar received twice as many responses.

How you can apply this to your contracting website

1. Create segmented landing pages for each of the main products or services you offer.

2. Decide on a single goal for each landing page.

3. Have all the elements on the page working together to persuade the website visitor to take the desired action.  Elements include your headline, body text, your call to action, your social proof, etc.

4. Remove the navigation bar.
