BMW 2 Series Coupe: Upping the Ante for Luxury Sports Coupes

If you’re a fan of capable luxury sport coupes, then you may have shed a tiny tear when BMW killed off the 1 Series. It was a rear-drive, luxury two-door, spawning variants like the insane 1 Series M. It kept wealthy compact performance luxury enthusiast satisfied for nearly 10 years already, believe it or not. But cry no more, the 1 Series is being replaced, with something even better: the 2 Series.

For BMW, the 2 Series — along with the 4 Series — is a new formula for the German automaker. Looking to shake things up and split coupes off as unique models from their respective sedan counterparts, the two-doors are moving on up. 1 Series coupe, becomes 2, and 3 Series coupe, becomes 4. It’s as easy as that.

Picking up where the 1 Series left off, the 2 Series Coupe comes with a base (228i) 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine capable of 240 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 5.4 seconds. Opt for the M235i meanwhile, and you’ll find a pretty nifty 3.0-liter inline-six good for 322 horsepower and a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds;  a few M accessories included and both available in stick.

The interior has been given a makeover as well. Black, red and mocha brown leather mold seamlessly into the architecture, complete with a signature BMW shit knob, of course.

Pricing for the new coupe starts at $32,100 for the 228i, with the M235i setting you back $43,100. The 2 Series will make its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January of next year.
