Cave-o-nomics: The basics of the economy

By Owen Linderholm | Small Business

The video below and even this blog post take a very simplistic view of the economy. But bear with us, please. This is just the beginning. Over the next twenty or so weeks we are going to take a regular look at the very basics of our complex global economy. Once a week we will present one of the videos from the excellent ‘We the Economy’ series and try to add a little context, especially for anyone who is thinking about taking a tiny step toward being a more direct and powerful cog in the enormous economic machinery by starting their own business.

This week we are starting with some simple economic basics. ‘Cave-o-nomics’ a distinctive look at the very basics of our economic systems. Yes, it’s simple and reality is more complex. But these are the foundations on which we will build a better understanding of the economy and help you be a better and more successful participant in it. The reality is that the participants in this video are all entrepreneurs. They are all setting out to do something new and in so doing they change their lives, the lives of those around them and even the rest of the world just a little bit.

Anyone who wants to start their own business is setting out with the very same goals. And even in an economic model as simple as that illustrated in this video there are important lessons. You need to work with your neighbors and community in order to build a market for your small business. And if you have existing competitors you need to be competitive in some way to succeed.

If ‘Cave-o-nomics’ has inspired you at all to think you can make a better spear or a warmer coat or you can hunt just a little better than the next person, then take a look at some of these additional resources to help you get started on your own business ideas.
