A fairly major update is coming for Apple iPads and iPhones within the next few hours. The update will have several new features, bug fixes, and benefits.
The biggest added feature in the 8.1 update is the introduction of Apple Pay. The new payment system uses the “NFC antenna built in to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in retail stores, and Touch ID for online purchases,” according to the press release. Apple Pay will be supported by all major banks and the majority of larger regional banks. It also has the support of all major credit card companies.
Another significant update will be the SMS handoff. This means “Users with Macs running Yosemite will be available to send SMS messages from their computer providing the iPhone is within Bluetooth range or connected to the same wireless router.” The instant hotspot feature will also become available, giving you the ability to connect to your iPhone from a Macbook or an iPad and use it as a hotspot without having to use a password.
A third major update is the iCloud photo library. This addition will store all the photos you take on your device and allows you to share them through all of your devices. The number of files will not be limited to the most recent 1000 images, as is the case with the current Photo Stream. In addition to this update, the camera roll function will return in the update.
The new Apple 8.1 Update will be available this afternoon, and the time is not yet certain. Judging from past updates from Apple, the update could be dropping any time between 1-3pm, Eastern Time. It will certainly be available in an “over-the-air” download, but it is suggested that you backup your device before performing the update.
