Question

Does the SBA have mentors to assist in buying an established business?

I have heard that the SBA has volunteer mentors to assist in buying an established business. I have called my local SBA office and get no answer or return phone call when I leave a message. What should I do? Just go there and demand service lol!?

Don't waste your time. The fact that you can't get them to answer the phone or call you back should tell you all you need to know about the SBA or SCORE. They're worthless.

SCORE uses supposed business owners, or ex business owners, but how many of them have operated a business like you have, or were hugely successful? Basically, it's sheep leading the sheep. It's pretty worthless stuff, and all of their free services are in GROUP seminars, that are generic and tell you things like to write a business plan.

If you plan to purchase a business, link up with a business broker, then have an accountant and attorney go over the details.

Go to www.score.org/mentors and enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a volunteer SCORE mentor. They will guide you through the process and you can meet with them as many times as you need to.

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide and is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE has 364 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 13,000 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business mentors.
