What does this mean....................................?

"But so large were the harvests for crops such as wheat that the domestic market could not absorb them." What exactly does the part about the market absorbing them mean? People weren't buying all of them because there were so many?

It means that there were too many goods and not enough buyers.

Usually this scenario drops the price of the goods because the seller wants to get rid of it but can't find anybody willing to buy it at the usual price.
