Question

How much does it cost to trademark a name?

I'm looking to start my own business. I came up with a name but heard that it was best to trademark it. How do I do so and how much would it cost? Does it vary in different states (I'm in Florida, by the way)?

Registering a business name is not the same as registering a trademark. Trademark is not a verb. You can obtain a trademark or enforce trademark protection by following certain rules. Some people refer to the optional process of registering a trademark as "trademarking", but you either have trademark rights before you file or you don't. Just filing does NOT give you any rights at all, at least not in the USA, unless and until you swear that you have ALSO used it as a designation of source or quality on the types of goods that are recited in the application. You can register in one or more states or in the USPTO. Fees vary from $50 to nearly $300.

The vast majority of trademarks in the USA are not registered anywhere. Yet, those trademark rights are enforceable in state and federal courts, if necessary.

Registration of a business name is a matter for state law. Look it up on your state's Secretary of State website or google "florida d/b/a" Here is a useful paragraph I found:
"Florida law requires registration of a fictitious name with the Florida Department of State in order for an individual or entity to transact business under a name other than the actual legal name of the individual or entity"
