Drinking wine is growing in popularity in the U.S., up 20 million gallons from 2011 to 2012. Women drink wine more than men, 52 percent of women prefer wine as their alcohol of choice. The U.S. now makes up the largest wine market in the world, consuming 13 percent of wine produced globally.

The average price of a bottle of table wine in the U.S. is $6.30. Chardonnay is the most popular wine to be purchased in the U.S. In 2012, $34.6 billion was spent on wine in the U.S. alone. There are 175,000 retail outlets and 332,000 restaurants and bars where Americans can purchase wine. 90% of the wine produced in the U.S. comes from California, the state that also contains five of the top U.S. wine destinations.
