4 Tips for Using Twitter to Grow Your Email List
If you’ve been following the blog for the last several weeks, you’re probably aware of how to use social media to grow your email list – and how to use your email list to get more followers and fans on your social networks.
So now it’s time to get a little bit more specific. Here are four easy tactics you can start using today to boost your email sign-ups:
Twitter Tip #1: Mention your email list or your e-newsletter in your Twitter bio
Twitter gives you 160 characters to create a bio that explains who you are and what you do. Rather than include a standard link to your website’s home page, why not link people directly to your email sign up page? You can use your usual sign up page, or create a separate landing page for folks that find you via Twitter. Either way, you’ll want to use a shortened and/or customized link that’s 20 characters or less, so you have plenty of characters left for the rest of your bio.
A great idea here is to put a piece of free content on the sign-up page, so that people can get a taste of what you do, get something of value for free, and sign up for your email list right away if they like what you’ve offered.
Twitter Tip #2: Create a “Welcome” Direct Message (DM) that includes a link to your list sign-up page
I’m not talking about generic DMs that are obviously automatically generated. You can do a lot to personalize your DMs, and you certainly don’t have to automate them (although you can if you want to). All you need to do is create a friendly message welcoming your new follower to your Twitter community, and letting them know that if they like what they see, they can sign up for your email list to receive more of your fantastic and useful content.
Twitter Tip #3: Send a “Did you miss our latest ___?” tweet
A couple of days after you’ve sent your newsletter to your email subscribers, let your Twitter followers know what they missed. A quick “Did you catch our latest newsletter?” tweet can drive traffic to your site and bring in new email subscribers at the same time. This can be especially effective for people who may have been following you for a while on Twitter, and are ready to make a bigger “commitment” to you or your brand. You could also use this tactic to promote recordings of a live webinar you recently ran, or a video of a talk or presentation you’ve given.
Twitter Tip #4: Put email sign up forms on all the pages you link to on Twitter
This one’s a no-brainer. If you tweet to announce a new blog post or article you’ve published on your site (and if you’re not doing this, you should be!), make sure your blog or newsletter pages include sign-up forms. This really comes down to being thorough and keeping missed sign-up opportunities to a minimum.
