Over the weekend a 20th Anniversary Grey Edition of the Playstation 4 was released to the general public. That special edition gaming console was only available to the first 12,300 customers who were quick on the draw. The original cost of the device? $499. The new cost on eBay? $20,000.
If you really want to own a Grey edition of the PS4, there are only a handful of the consoles being sold online. Even if you get your hands on the coveted prize, it doesn’t do anything that your current console can’t already accomplish.
The 20th Anniversary PS4 features the same original grey coloring from the original PS4 which debuted on December 3, 1994.
Several of the consoles managed to sell between $500 and $1,800. However, at least 350 systems are well into the five-figure range with their asking price.
The PS4 20th anniversary edition console sold out in a matter of minutes when it went on sale via the Sony Store on Saturday. Following the amazingly quick sell-through the company wrote, “We appreciate your interest, but we will have no more inventory,” the Sony Store page currently reads. “Apologies for the inconvenience.”
In Japan gamers are being given the option to purchase the gaming console through a lottery, while a PlayStation Blog EU post says the system “will not be available via traditional retail channels” in the region. In Spain, 350 of the limited edition consoles will be auctioned off directly to consumers with proceeds going to charity.
Lucky buyers will have their limited-edition 20th anniversary PS4 shipped out to them on December 21.
