File Cabinets - Industry Lingo

To make the right business purchases, you have to know the language. Here's a guide to file cabinet lingo.

Vertical File
Another term for the traditional file cabinet. These have anywhere from two to five drawers per cabinet. Cabinets are generally only 15 inches wide, and feature drawer depths ranging 26 inches to 28 1/2 inches. Vertical files are convenient because they take up very little wall space.

Lateral File
A design of filing cabinet that is much wider than the vertical file, allowing files to be stored front to back or side to side in the drawers. Lateral file drawers can hold one-third more files than a standard vertical unit, with cabinets available in widths from 36 inches to 42 inches.

Fire and Impact Resistance
Filing cabinets that are impact resistant and fireproof. This means that cabinets can keep documents protected by maintaining an interior temperature of less than 350 degrees F for one hour even in a 1700-degree fire.

Rolling Cabinets
An alternate storage option. Rolling cabinets can be used to store many more files in a set amount of floor space. To access the file, you simply roll or move the cabinets apart to create an aisle.
