Question
Can I ask for Bereavement pay if I work part-time?
Hi, I work part-time at Staples and, this past Monday, my mother passed away. Going into work is a little bit hard right now. I work 3 days a week: Th, F, and Sat. Yesterday, I called in for personal family issues. I didn't want to say what happened because everyone would gossip about it - including the managers. Can I ask for bereavement for a couple of days? Am I qualified? I've worked there for almost a year...

Since you are part time, you will be allotted the time off (more than likely 3 days) without getting into trouble for not being there, but you may not get paid. Unless you have normal hours everyday that you work. Then you might get paid.... but that was your Mom! They can't fire you.... I'm so sorry for your loss! God Bless your family.

Generally speaking you won't be eligible for that. It, like paid vacation and sick days, is usually reserved for full time employees. I'm so sorry for your loss.

You can ASK for anything - but it is whatever corporate policy is. My guess is that there is no bereavement leave with pay for part time people. But ask your manger about time-off without pay if you are willing to do that.

It is time to have a conversation with your supervisor.
