No they are not necessarily the same thing. A business unit usually refers to a division or a specific market segment of an organization, while a department can be a sub-unit of that division. For example a manufacturing company may have a diverse line of products that it builds, thus have several different markets. So you can have the same departments, but in different business units. For this example let say this company builds items for both homes and cars. Because of the diverse nature of the two markets, the company has separate business units for each. Within each business unit, it then has differing departments such as marketing, operations, administration, etc. So if you were a marketing analyst for home products, your business unit would be Home Products, and department would be Marketing. Your co-worker could have the same position, just for Auto so his business unit would be Automobile Products, with department being Marketing. The business unit could also describe the areas mentioned above such as operations, sales & marketing, administration etc, with the department being a sub-unit of that. Operations may include manufacturing, personnel, purchasing, maintenance, etc which would be departments. So if you were a line worker, you would work in the manufacturing department of the Operations business unit. It really depends on the size and complexity of the organization
