Question
I had a contractor build a house for me the original price for the work was 50,000 the final bill was 100,000?
the house was a 2 story with a rooftop patio for 50,000 after some extras and a third bedroom and bath on the roof I had paid 70,000 which I thought pretty much paid for the additions when I got the final bill it was 100,000which was a big shock.my question is what responsibility did the contractor have in informing me and what responsibility did I have. this is a very lot of money to me and because the contractor is my brother in law it has caused stress in the family.

Your contract with the builder is the thing that is going to control whether or not you owe this money. Generally, he would have agreed to a fixed price, and any changes you made afterwards would be documented with a change order that specified the additional cost for the change. You would have had total knowledge all along the way of what your costs were going to be. If you did not have a written contract with your brother in law contractor, then you are going to have to either work out a compromise on this, or let him take you to court where you will need to be prepared with documentation of what your expectations were and he will have to document the overages.
