right to privacy
Question
How do I keep the landlord's secretaries from exploring my apartment?
I have kept the property well, but sometimes with work and exams my stuff has gotten messy. I always clean it up and have never damaged any property. I need to make sure that they don't visit when my apartment isn't tidy, but lock installation is out and a formal security system is expensive. I also want privacy. Technically they can come to check on maintenance, etc. Any creative ideas?

Actually, they CAN enter without notifying you if there is a maintenance issue, if they think someone has skipped, smell smoke, etc. Other than that, landlords are typically required to give you a notice beforehand. You could just tell them to call you in advance before they would come in, so you can have your apartment nice and completely clean for them.

The landlord, leasing agent, secretaries, maintenance staff, etc, all require your permission to enter your apartment. They cannot unilaterally enter without your expressed approval.

Actually they can't just come on un for maintenance. They have to give you 24 hours notice or be there at your request. The only time they can enter without notice or request is in an emergency situation, where their property would be damaged if they waited. The most common emergency us a water leak.
