Question

Is it illegal in Wisconsin to sell a house with a traditional septic tank?

My parents are selling their home and I heard that it's illegal to sell a home in Wisconsin with a traditional septic system. Is there any truth to this claim? My source was far from reliable, but I wanted to check on it anyway. If you could please leave a website where you got the info for your answer from I would appreciate it! Thank you! It's a rural area, there is no availability for hookup. I didn't think the woman who told me this could possibly be right, because there are several other homes for sale in the area that have traditional septics.

No, it is not illegal. However, a buyer will undoubtedly have an inspection and contingency for a septic system which works and meets code. Your parents can expect to be asked to pay for a new system if the current one doesn't pass muster.

Not by the state. But if the sewer line is available your city may require that the house be hooked up prior to sale.
