Question

Helping a disabled elderly adult in exchange for lower rent?

I'm a college student in Wisconsin and next year I plan on partaking in a program called Homeshare. What it is, is that a younger adult lives with a disabled elderly adult and helps them occasionally, maybe by getting groceries, making dinner, cleaning the house. It's not a 24 hour care kind of deal, just extra help when they need it. I was wondering if anyone had participated in a program like this and what you though of it, like/dislikes, things to consider, that kind of thing. Thanks :)

I did this with my mother. Although I did free rent. The girl that stayed there did all of the shopping, basic cleaning (I still had a maid come in once a week), reminded my mother to eat every day (yeah, it was an issue) and reheated her food (I had meals delivered). She also would take her out to get her hair done, things like that. It worked out great. My stress was relieved, my mother not only had some care but had some company and the girl was able to save a great deal of money. She also used this as a reference, she was in nursing school. After my mothers passing she stayed in the home until it was sold.

i haven't done anything like that but living with an old person doesn't sound like much fun... i'd rather pay full rent

It sounds like a very good idea to me. It's a pity they don't adopt it in the UK.

It sounds like a good idea to me...it would be nice to help out an elder but having that said, it might be hard living with someone older... I'm not sure being a college student and all that I would want to do that at that age...? But it sounds nice, and is a good idea. SOCCER PLAYERS!!!!: PLEASE answer: answers ...

Sounds like a great experience and a "good thing" to do. Plus the lower rent? Try it and see. Worst case scenario, it doesn't work out and you get a different place. Good luck.
