Question
what's the best time of day to sack someone?
first thing in the morning before they start any work? or last thing in the day just as they are going home? they would be put on garden leave immediately so would be asked to leave straight away... no desk to clear out, just a question of seeing / not seeing the other staff. person in question is already looking for other work and has made no secret of it.

Just make sure you have a paycheck ready. If they have a desk to clear out, do it at the end of the day. If not, then the start of a shift is better.

tell them right after lunch, that way they are more relaxed and it will work out better overall.

First thing in the morning. That way, you haven't got the extra hours to work yourself up. To the employee, it won't make much difference as it's horrible anyway, but will give them an extra day if they are proactive, to go out looking for more work.

Do it at the end of the day when all other staff have gone home so that they can clear their desk and remove any personal items without causing embarrassment to other members of staff.

Make sure you have followed all the employment regulations to the letter. Know of a company that had to pay £5k compensation because they slightly got the procedure wrong! The bureaucrats want to justify their jobs and will throw the book at you to make them look good! Doesn't matter if the employee is useless or robbing you blind - only if the paperwork / procedures are 100% correct. Their principle is the employer is 100% guilty unless they can conclusively prove they are right!
