I'm not a coffee shop owner, but I have worked with many coffee shops and many other businesses. First off, no business is easy to open and operate. There are a few miracle cases where someone just ends up in the right place at the right time, but the chances of that are something like winning the lottery. As far as coffee shops go, it depends a lot on your business plan, and what competition you have in your area. Lately coffee shops have been taking a beating, not just by the economy, but by McDonalds, and Duncan doughnuts and other large chains getting into the coffee business, not to mention Starbucks, Seattle's best and the other super coffee retailers, which are some of the most aggressive businesses in the world. This doesn't mean it's impossible to start one, but if you are trying to start up in Seattle or somewhere where there's 50 coffee shops per person, it's going to be very difficult. If you can find a location with reasonable competition, and provide a coffee shop that is unique from others, and one that appeals in some way to the local population, then it can definitely still be successful. People like to like small, remarkable businesses, but not at the expense of excessive price, or inconvenience.
