What about renting in Canada with bad credit?

I had problems with my credit due to an illness. I am living with some friends now but I want to move on my own. I have checked with private companies and they all check my credit, although I used to rent before and have excellent history in one private company, does this count? for at least asking references? What about private owners or rooms to share, do they check credit too? Thank you!!
