Question

Who can I go to for help with credit cards?

I have this problem. I need a credit card but I can not find any company that will allow me to have one. I have not got the best credit and I am trying to rebuild it. my history is, I got a credit card when I just turned 18, and was late on several payments, but paid it off in full last year. Then I have some medical bills, and a bill in collection DMC. And also, I had a bank account closed out due to an unpayed overdraft. I have borrowed money from a lender before, when I was 19 or so and never missed a payment or was late plus paid it off a few months early. I recently borrowed money from this same lender, and have not missed any payments or been late and they told me I should get a credit card to build my revolving credit back up, who can I turn to to help me?? I do send money on these bills, when I recieve statements. I am also a single mother and work a minimum wage job of only 7.25/hr.

To build up your credit, you will need to pay everything on time and in the required amount. If you pay anything late, your credit will go down. If you pay some money on time, but less than the required amount, your credit will go down. Also, because of the collection, overdraft, and late payments, you may no longer be able to get a regular credit card. If you cannot get a regular card, you should go to a bank that offers "secured" credit cards to depositors with bad credit, deposit money at that bank, and obtain a "secured" credit card from that bank.

You have a lot of negatives on your credit report. It will take years of good payment history to see anything close to a decent score. You will probably have to go with a secured credit card (you pay a deposit which is held as collateral against the line of credit). Try your bank first. When you get the card, use it for small purchases and pay it in full every month. In about a year, you should be able to get a regular credit card or convert the secured card into a regular account.

I would go to the same lender that you have never been late on payments before. Chances of you getting a credit card right now with unpaid bills is very slim unless you want a crazy interest rate. You also need to be paying off the bills that are past due and credit card isn't going to help till you pay those bills.

One important note: Once you get the credit card pay it in full each month the day you get the bill in the mail. Carrying balances actually reduces your credit worthiness. When you pay in full you can achieve top 800+ scores, and you never pay a penny interest. Don't foul up your future - if you use credit again - pay in full. /
