Question

Should you mention that you own a business when looking for a full-time position?

If one has a small freelance business that is closely related to your desire to find fulltime work/employer in the field - should you mention this on your resume? Example: you fix computers and you have a small business on the side - but are looking for full time work as a computer technician - and want to put that on a resume. Thanks!

Alot of businesses frown on 'moonlighting' because you're earning money on the side while working for them. The chance that you could be using their equipment / phones / materials to further your business could also be problematic. I would reference it but not include that its a current position. It helps, but being completely 100% honest will hurt your chances.

You could put that you occasionally fix computers and people are happy with your service. If you put that you do it as a small business they might think that you don't have the time to put into this job.

I would sell the fact that you have X amount of experience and you will commit to their company if you did chose to tell them. You might be at a great disadvantage to yourself by disclosing your freelance job because your possible boss might feel that you could offer your business at a discounted rate and then lose a potential customer. or they maybe try to swing your customers from you

Hi Jess, Not a good idea since it is essentially a competitive situation. There would be an atmosphere of a possible conflict of interest regarding customers and resources. Not saying you would, but it would be easy for a person with insider company knowledge of pricing and policies to be able to undercut and offer better warranties and that sort of thing. It would probably be best to either find a business in a totally unrelated field, put all of your effort into your own technical business or state all of your qualifications and negotiate the best salary you can to settle into your new job.
