Where is the best but affordable off-campus housing near UIC?

Question

I want to transfer to UIC but don't want to live on campus, I am not from Chicago originally so does anyone have any input on some good places to live? Around $1000/month and in neighborhood that doesn't have a high crime rate. Thanks!

Just south of UIC in the neighborhood of Pilsen you'll find the cheapest, but the area along Taylor Street is closer to campus and more student oriented. But for $1000 you could probably find places in the South and West Loop as well, which are a little bit swankier.
