No, usually it's NOT more than $500,000 - it can be anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000,000. There's no "usual". Life insurance can take WEEKS to put into effect. It's not like car insurance. Sometimes, it can take up to two months, if doctor reports are required. The insurance company establishes the health of the insured, they'll do a paramedical exam, including bloodwork, saliva, and urine tests, THEN tells you how much money it's going to be. Life insurance is basically a bet, if the person is going to die during the term. The odds will ALWAYS favor the house. You're not going to be able to, for example, put $100 down on a perfectly healthy 65 year old, for that much coverage. It's much more likely it would cost maybe $1,000 a month.

Whole life on a 65-year is probably not available. If it is, it will be very expensive. You cannot order up "immediate coverage" on life insurance; it doesn't work like car insurance.
