Custom Built Trade Show Booth Process?

This year my company put me in charge of a small booth using one of those Pop displays. I had to shop around in different countries for them (as we didn't want to lug them around). The companies all sold the same stuff but had different names etc, etc. There is now talk of "a bigger and better" booth next year and I want to get a heads up on how the custom built booth companies work. My main question I suppose is about the booth design. Do I need to pay for it? I image that most companies will have designs they have done before. I'm thinking about getting one company to design something for us and then asking a few to companies for a price. Is that the best way? Or will it get flooded with designs etc the minute I contact them?
